2.50 Redcar: Maiden Handicap (Class 6)

Normally this type of race wouldn’t be my cup of coffee. Too much guesswork required who is in it to win and who uses it as a public gallop. This Maiden Handicap is pretty poor, it’s simply the nature of the race. Some lightly raced individuals with low opening marks take dramatic step ups in trip and may well improve for it. Dew Pond is one who jumps out in that regard.

But it is the horse at the head of the weights who clearly is the most intriguing runner. The Cashel Man hasn’t shown allot as a juvenile in Maidens last year. But gelded over the winter, which often works wonders for High Chaparral’s and particularly for trainer David Simcock, he may leave those forms behind, now going handicapping for the first time.

Not only that, but The Cashel Man also takes a dramatic step up in trip, which on pedigree should suit very well and see him improving a good deal. He is a full-brother to decent Handicapper Thunder Pass, who took a similar route last year and improved from maidens to handicaps when stepping up in trip.

An opening mark of 63 is stiff enough for what The Cashel Man has shown so far, but this poor race represents an ideal opportunity to get off the mark with conditions very much to suit him.

8.00 Ballinrobe: Beginners Chase. 2m 1f

A rare trip to the jumps for me in the middle of the flat season. The reason is A Sizing Network. A lightly raced five year old who makes his chasing debut today. I have been waiting for this for a while, basically since he got off the mark in a maiden hurdle back in November. A Sizing Network was always going to be a chaser. He jumps big and bold and has the frame to be one.

It didn’t quite work out over hurdles for him, though he performed with credit in two of his three subsequent starts. He got beaten on the line in a handicap hurdle last month at Punchestown, when he made a big move maybe a bit too early and also seemed to idle in front after jumping the last. His only poor showing, leaving the debut out, came at Leopardstown over 2m 4f in soft conditions.

Two miles on good ground seems ideal and I imagine he can leave his hurdling form easily behind over fences. There should be plenty of improvement to come from this fresh, young individual. He has probably a bit to too find with the other market principles on pure form and ratings, but should be easily capable of doing so.

Easterby’s Trump Cards

3.50 Redcar: Class 3 Handicap, 5f

Quick ground at Redcar today, should make for exciting racing. This 5f sprint handicap is going to be nothing less than fast and furious! Favourite Desert Law is in good form, ran out a fine 3rd at York just a couple of days ago. His record over 5f is rather poor though. On his best form he’d be hard to beat, but it looks like he is not all that well handicapped these days. Desert Law looks vulnerable to others in this field.

Tim Easterby hast two runners. Both make plenty of appeal. His best chance appears to be Soul Brother. He looks physically improved this year now as a four year old and was a bit unlucky in his last at Musselburgh. He got out late into the clear but finished strongly only to be denied in a photo. A lenient 1lb up, he looks to have a major chance today as he seems to be improving and not yet at his limit. I suspect that he needed his first seasonal outing at Ripon, which also stretched his stamina over 6f where he used up plenty of energy early on to get the lead. Five furlongs and quick ground is perfectly fine for him today.

Easterby’s second string Mappin Time has been very good on the All-Weather this winter. Judged on those efforts he must rate a lively chance today. He didn’t perform in soft conditions at Chester recently, but that is a form easily to forgive. The minimum trip and quick ground is what he really needs and with a fine 7lb claimer in the saddle he should be a big runner.

Noble Asset is not to underestimate. A progressive sort, run out a fine second the last time. He’s competitive, though another 4lb up for that effort makes him look not overly well handicapped. Hard to see any of the others involved here. Mark and ground are against most of these.

The value lies with the two Easterby runners in my mind. I saw the good prices for Soul Brother vanishing, but Sportingbet threw a 6/1 into the aether. Have to be on that. As well as 12/1 for Mappin Time – way too big. Both have sensational chances to win this race in my mind and are way overpriced.

Monday Quickie at Redcar

20150411_113220
A quick tip for this Monday – Godolphin stable jockey William Buick has only one single ride today and he should make this a successful one. His mount Second Wave reappears after a promising debut win at this course last season. The yard is going really well, so one would assume the colt is probably fit enough for his comeback.

Second Wave is sure to appreciate the trip, which is a step up from his 7f maiden win, where he overcame greenness and stayed on well. He has scope to improve with age as well and meets perfect ground conditions today on his Handicap debut. That says his opening mark could be quite lenient as he is nicely bred and bound to progress – on paper at least.

4.20 Redcar: Second Wave @ 11/10 Ladbrokes – 10pts win
