Victoriously’s a colt with a bright future

DSC_2268

Normally this wouldn’t be the kind of race I have a bet in – but the Brian Meehan inmate Victoriously is very much overpriced here I feel. He improved massively from his debut run last summer when he finished a good third over 7.5f at Lingfield. He was very green throughout the race, most of the time without cover too but showed a bit of talent the way he made progress from 3f out.

He was put away after that, but he was always one who should improve with age given his pedigree. He’ll relish the mile trip as well I suspect. This colt is pretty nicely bred, out of a listed race winning mare and I would like to think that connections eye a maiden success to move on to bigger targets then.

This is a pretty competitive maiden, so nothing is given. But interestingly the Meehan yard is going really well right now and young Antonio Fresu comes here for this one ride only – he is riding strongly at the moment, despite not having many too many chances to show his skills. But if he sits on the horse, than he does so on a good one, more often than not it seems Meehan has provided a winner for this young jockey recently, which makes me believe he wouldn’t be booked if there isn’t something expected from Victoriously here.

Hakam has the edge

DSC_2418

Usually I avoid maidens like sprouts – but I’ve to make an exception here. The favourite Akeed Champion showed clearly promise last season and may well develop into a nice horse now as a three year old. The Fahey yard goes extremely well and for that simple reason you’d assume Akeed Champion is fit and well. But his two year old form is nothing out of the ordinary and the fact that he beaten a short favourite on his second start means he could be vulnerable today.

The Godolphin newcomer Gossiping is an interesting individual, considering his fine pedigree and the strong form of the yard. The Richard Hannon trained Acaster Malbis has experience on his side but appears exposed.

Interestingly, beside the favourite, only Charlie Hills’ inmate Hakam has a future big race entry (2.000 Guineas). The War Front son cost almost half a million US$ as a yearling and he’s obviously well bred and related to some fine horses. What I particularly like is the fitness edge. He started his campaign in a Lingfield maiden last month, when he finished 2nd, beaten in a photo and showed loads of greenness.

Hakam looks a big, strong individual with plenty of scope and should have learned plenty from his debut. The switch to turf should be no problem, nor the good ground. Since he is related to some fine turf horses, one would think he may turn out to be nice horse. If he’s a Guineas horse is another question, but on balance I feel he is overpriced in this field, where not too many horses make much appeal.

Tuesday Night Quickie

Quick Tip

One late selection for the night racing at Turffontein – the last race on the card, a rather poor maiden, looks interesting. The favourite Odd Rob is a very short price here in my mind. One has to assume that he improves dramatically for his recent outing. He finished a good runner-up after a long lay-off and had been gelded before, so indeed he should come on today, but the step up in trip looks a bit of a concern. His lightly raced profile gives him an ideal chance though, if he can find a bit improvement and stay the trip, as the opposition looks weak. But he is still way too short for this sort of race.

Equally lightly raced overcame big odds to run a fair third on debut. He may progress while Woody Glow could improve for the step up in trip. But those races often produce some strange results and longs-hot Twenty Eight Nine might sneak in for the placings here.

He didn’t show anything in his first three starts, but this is his third run after gelding, and sometimes this needs a bit until improvement kicks-in. He tries 2.000m for the first but should relish this new trip on pedigree. Interesting is the jockey booking with Johnny Geroudis who is red hot at the moment and is riding here for red hot trainer Alec Laird. I’ve seen worth 66/1 shots in my life.
